Turkey Trot History
The race was founded in 1989. The purpose of the race was to promote health, community spirit and raise money for a charitable cause. The first couple of years the money raised by the event went to Red Cross (89) and the Western Fairfax Christian ministries (90, 91). In 1992 , our neighbor and friend, Gail Kurkjian was diagnosed with breast cancer. We wanted to do something for her and she asked us to donate the money to Life with Cancer (LWC), the organization that was helping her and her family (3 young girls) cope with Gail’s cancer. We got in touch with Gordon Hay, the director of Life with Cancer and formed a lasting relationship. Sadly, the community lost Gail in 1995. Gail’s spirit lives on along with many others that have been stricken by cancer not only in the Virginia Run community but also with our surrounding neighborhoods. The event has raised over $640,000 for LWC. Last year we raised 76K and had over 4400 participants! We could not put on the race without the community volunteers , our generous sponsors or our loyal participants.
